For decades, fans have dreamed of seeing Tamil cinema legends Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan together on screen. That dream seemed closer to reality when Thalaivar 173 (working title) was announced last year, with Sundar C set to direct. However, just days after the announcement, Sundar C unexpectedly stepped away from the project, leaving fans puzzled.
Sundar C’s Honest Confession
In a recent interview, Sundar C opened up about the decision: “Directing a film with Rajini and Kamal is extraordinary, but it’s not a simple task. The pressure is immense, and I realized I couldn’t handle it. For the past 16 years, I’ve been making films the way I like, giving audiences what they want. But with such a massive project, I felt I couldn’t explain or convince others about my vision. I’m not great at narrating stories in a way that satisfies everyone. I feared I wouldn’t be able to do full justice to these two legends, so I stepped away.”
The Buzz
While fans were disappointed, Sundar C’s candid explanation highlights the enormous expectations and pressure that come with handling a project featuring two of cinema’s biggest icons. The film remains one of the most talked-about projects in Tamil cinema, and audiences are eagerly waiting to see who will take charge of this historic collaboration.
