Prominent producer and distributor Bunny Vaas has now voiced his concerns, and his post has gone viral. He bluntly stated that films earning “hundreds of crores” are not purely the result of mass popularity, but largely due to inflated ticket prices burdening audiences. He added that small films are suffering even more, with single screens and distributors facing heavy losses.

Tollywood audiences are facing a tough reality: whenever a big hero’s film releases, ticket prices skyrocket for 7–10 days, forcing many families to stay away from theatres. While across India ticket rates remain standard, only in the Telugu states do hikes continue for extended periods. This has gradually pushed audiences toward piracy and OTT platforms, leaving theatres struggling.

Bunny Vaas questioned: “Instead of fighting over how to share the reduced revenue, shouldn’t we fix the root cause of why income has dropped in the first place?” He emphasized that producers and exhibitors are both losing, and ignoring the real issue will only worsen the crisis.

He pointed out four major reasons behind the decline in theatre audiences:

  • Delayed hero releases: Stars taking too much time between films reduces regular footfall.
  • Quick OTT releases: Movies arriving on streaming within 27 days discourage theatre visits.
  • Weak content: Audiences question whether it’s worth spending so much for average stories.
  • High multiplex canteen prices: Families feel entertainment is becoming unaffordable.

He stressed that three of these four issues are within the industry’s control, and unless they are corrected, debates over revenue sharing are meaningless. His candid remarks have sparked wide discussion, highlighting the urgent need for reform in Telugu cinema’s theatrical ecosystem.
