Telugu Producers discuss the issues of OTT deals and early OTT releases. Should the OTT window be adjusted to a 6 or 8-week gap after the theatrical release?

In a major step that could reshape the future of theatres in Telugu states, the Telugu film industry held an important meeting today to discuss the ongoing debate over OTT releases. The meeting took place at the Film Chamber, focusing on the growing concerns of theatre owners and distributors.

One of the biggest challenges currently faced by theatre owners and distributors is the quick arrival of films on OTT platforms. Many movies are streaming online just a few weeks after their theatrical release. Distributors have expressed their disappointment, stating that this trend is reducing footfall in theatres, as audiences prefer to wait for the OTT release instead of watching films on the big screen. As a result, there is a strong demand to increase the gap between theatrical and OTT releases.

Special Committee Led by Suresh Babu

To address this issue, a special committee has been formed under the leadership of noted producer Suresh Babu. The committee met today at the Film Chamber in Hyderabad and held detailed discussions regarding the OTT release window.

At present, many films are premiering on OTT platforms within four weeks of their theatrical release. Distributors are now strongly urging that this window be extended to six to eight weeks in order to protect theatre business and ensure better revenue from theatrical runs.

However, no final decision has been taken yet. The committee is carefully reviewing existing agreements with OTT platforms, the interests of producers, and the financial losses faced by distributors. More meetings are expected to be held in the coming weeks, and a clear, mutually acceptable policy is likely to be announced soon.

Will the Rule Apply Only to New Films?

According to the key proposals discussed in the meeting, the proposed ‘8-week rule’ may apply only to new films that are yet to begin shooting. The committee believes that if audiences know that a film will take longer to arrive on OTT, they will be more inclined to watch it in theatres instead of waiting for its digital release.

If implemented, this decision could mark a significant turning point for Tollywood theatres and help strengthen the theatrical business in the long run.
