Assi is actress Taapsee Pannu’s new film with acclaimed filmmaker Anubhav Sinha, which marks their third collaboration after Mulk (2018) and Thappad (2020). In a recent promotional interview, she talked about such films not getting the deserved appreciation or response.
The actor rejected the idea that these films will always be available on digital platforms, stating that streaming services are now prioritizing attracting “massy” audiences. Taapsee Pannu recently expressed serious concerns that unconventional, character-driven films like Assi are “on the verge of becoming an extinct species” in theaters.
Made as a hard-hitting Hindi investigative legal drama, the film addresses the alarming, everyday reality of violence against women. The trailer of the film shows that it centers on a brutal, gang-rape case of a woman named Parima (Kani Kusruti), who is assaulted in a moving car by five men and thrown on a railway track to die. Tapsee Pannu appears as lawyer Raavi, who fights for Parima in the court.
The movie is a joint production between Benaras Mediaworks and T-Series Films, and it is set for a worldwide theatrical release on February 20, 2026.
